TUESDAY WITH TIM: 01.26.2016

1.  A prime number is one that can only be divided by 1 and itself. For example, the number 17 can only be divided by the numbers 1 and 17. Earlier this month, the largest prime number was discovered – it is a number with 22 million digits.

2.  My daughter Gabbie said this over the weekend when looking at an icicle near our front porch, “Dad, icicle’s are pretty, but they could impale you.”  Out of the mouth of babes.

3.  Congratulations to Kevin and Carmen Shanahan of the western part of the state who, despite the blizzard, went ahead with their wedding on Saturday.  While only family showed up because of the conditions, the bride said that “we’re getting married, blizzard or not.”  The happy couple strapped on snowshoes and took pictures outside.  No word if the couple danced to Do You Want to Build a Snowman?

4.  Why is a chameleon like a kitchen mixer?  They both blend in.

5.  The European Golf Tour, in an attempt to modernize the game, announced that members of their tour can wear shorts during pro-am tournaments and practice rounds. I’m sure the traditionalists in the game will not welcome this new attire, but hey, a professional golfer may soon be dressing like me on the weekends when I play.

6.  In just 15 days, Governor Tom Wolf will roll out his second year budget for the General Assembly even though they are still trying to figure out the first one.  #reedyisready

7.  Today, January 26 is National Peanut Brittle Day. Peanut Brittle is made of caramelized sugar or corn syrup. After the nuts are added it is poured out on a flat surface such as granite or marble and smoothed to an even sheet. When cooled the candy is broken into pieces. Here’s hoping that if you have some peanut brittle today that you won’t break a tooth.

8.  Just when you think that all teens care about are cell phones and video games, comes this story from nearby Susquehanna Township.  A high school senior walked two miles in the blizzard to get to work at an area assisted living community so that she could serve meals to the residents. "I just kept thinking it would be horrible for everyone if I didn't go in," said the 18-year old.

9.  So in last week’s Tuesday’s with Tim, I correctly picked Denver over New England and Carolina beating Arizona in the games this past Sunday.  You’ll have to wait until next week’s Tuesdays with Tim to see who I believe will win Super Bowl 50 on February 07.

10.  Watch here as Franklin Pierce University student sinks a 94-foot putt during half-time of a basketball game to win $500.  When you are in college, every little bit of money helps.

1. "It's not where you go, it's who you meet along the way."  from the Wizard of Oz

2.  What kind of fruit is never alone?  a pear

3.  Amazon just launched its new Dash Replenishment service. Connected products, such as Whirlpool washers, will automatically monitor and order more detergent when it becomes low.  What's next?  Someone to fold the laundry for you?

4. Splashdata's top 10 worst passwords have been announced and they are:  1. 123456  2. password  3. 12345678  4. qwerty  5. 12345  6.  123456789  7. football  8. 1234  9. 1234567  10. baseball.  Did your's make this list?

5.  My picks for this weekend's NFL games:  Denver over New England.  Carolina will beat Arizona.

6.  Today is number 203 in the PA Budget impasse.  In other news, the GOP met in Hershey this week for their winter meeting.  In still other news, my state senator announced that he is endorsing Marco Rubio for President and that he is joining his PA campaign team.  Let's see.  Work on the budget, have a meeting or help someone win the Presidency? Which would you chose?

7.  GOP State Senator Scott Wagner's latest tweet about Governor Wolf is troubling to me and gives further evidence that blaming is more important than doing in Harrisburg: “We had him down on the floor with our foot on his throat and we let him up. Next time, we won’t let him up.”

8.  "Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, along with every form of malice.  Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you."  Ephesians 4:31-32.

9.  I know that my daughter Grace would love this snack to be served for the Super Bowl: Bacon Guacamole
  • 3 large ripe Hass avocados, halved, pitted, and scooped out
  • 3 strips bacon, cooked crisp and cut into 1/2 inch pieces
  • 1/4 medium red onion, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground chipotle
  • 1/4 teaspoon Kosher or sea salt
  • Fresh cracked black pepper, to taste
  • 1 medium tomato, seeded and diced
  1. In a bowl, mash the avocado with a fork until it is nearly at your desired consistency. Stir in the bacon, red onion, lime juice, paprika, chipotle, salt, and pepper.
  2. Gently fold in the tomatoes. Serve immediately or else press a piece of plastic wrap flush into the top of the guacamole, refrigerate, and serve preferably within 24 hours.

10.  "Keep moving. Let nothing slow you up. Move on with dignity and honor and respectability...keep moving amid every mountain of opposition."  Martin Luther King, Jr., May 17, 1957

Have a great week everyone.
Enjoy the snow this weekend.  T

1. Today is day 196 of the Pennsylvania Budget (insert word here as they all mean the same thing): impasse; stalemate; standoff; deadlock; gridlock; bottleneck; hold-up; snarl; jam; standstill

2. My 8-year old daughter Gabbie’s New Year’s Resolution is that she will not make any New Year’s Resolutions.  Since she didn’t make any, she kept her resolution.  Go Gabbie!

3. Microsoft just released a new iPhone app called Microsoft Selfie.  The app detects the subject age, gender, skin tone and other factors in order to edit your selfie accordingly and make you look, well, a tad younger.

4. A gallon of gas has just gone under $2.00 per gallon in some locations in Lancaster County.  If it weren’t for the second highest gasoline tax in the country, we would be paying much less.  The state’s gas tax rate is based on the wholesale price of gas.  Locked in for two more years, this rate will be going up again in January 2017.

5. Am I the only one who hasn’t seen the new Star Wars movie yet?

6. A Mac guy since 2002, I am now a windows 10 guy. “Say it ain’t so Tim”.  “Oh, it is so”.  I am now the owner of a new Dell XPS 13 laptop.  Don’t fret apple lovers, I will never give up on my iPhone and iPad.

7. I bought two power ball tickets for the 1 billion plus drawing on Wednesday evening.  This is only the second time in my life that I bought a lottery ticket.  The first time was for a gift for someone years ago.

8. Amid increasing scrutiny by local governments passing anti-elephant circus acts, Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus is retiring its elephant acts this May.  In other news, many Presidential candidates are distancing themselves from the Republican Party, whose elephant is their symbol; and, if a non-establishment candidate gets the nomination, will the Republican party go the way of the Ringling elephants?

9. “Hey dad.”  “Yes Grace.”  “I was going to tell you a pizza joke, but it’s too cheesy.”  Fun times on the way to school in the mornings.

10. “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” James 4:6
